Basic Information


Prerequisite:

A passing grade in Calculus I is required, but a grade of C or better is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Historical data suggests that students who get a D in Calculus 1 usually end up with an F in Calculus 2.

Office Hours:

Some instructors will hold office hours in their own office. Other instructors will hold them in the Calculus Help Room.
The schedule for the Help Room is now posted.
Any Calculus 2 student will be helped in the Help Room by any of the TAs holding office hours there.

Course Contents

The course will include most of the material in chapters 6 through 11 as follows:
Chapter 6:
6.1, 6.2*, 6.3*, 6.4*, 6.5, 6.6, 6.7, 6.8
Chapter 7:
7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, 7.8
Chapter 11:
11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 11.4, 11.5, 11.6, 11.7, 11.8, 11.9, 11.10, 11.11
Chapter 8:
8.1, 8.2
Chapter 10:
10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5
Chapter 9:
9.3

We will cover roughly 3 sections per week, following the order above, with modifications as needed. The following Weekly Schedule will be updated throughout the semester.

Calculator Policy

No electronic computing device, e.g. calculators, tablets, laptops, cell phones, etc., will be allowed on exams. Policy for class use of calculators will be set by each instructor.

Exams

There will be 3 tests and a final exam. Tests 1 and 3 will be given separately for each section. Test2 (a.k.a. Midterm) and the final exam are cumulative, common to all sections, and given at the same time.

Test 1 Friday February 28
Midterm Wednesday March 19 Rooms 9:00-10:30 p.m.
Test 3 Monday April 28
Final exam   Monday  May 12 GW 69   7:00-9:00 p.m.

A detailed content for each exam will be announced and posted a week before the exam. However, we expect it to be roughly as follows:
Test 1 6.1, 6.2*, 6.3*, 6.4*, 6.6, 6.7, 6.8, 7.1-5, 7.8
Midterm(cumulative) 6.1-4*, 6.6-8, 7.1-5, 7.8, 11.1-7
Test 3 11.8-11, 10.5, 9.3, 6.5, 8.1-2
Final exam(cumulative)   6.1-8, 7.1-5, 7.8, 8.1-2, 9.3, 10.1-5, 11.1-11

Grading

The final exam will count for 40% of the course grade. Tests 1, 2 and 3, will count 15% each. Homework collected through WebAssign is 7.5%, and the remaining 7.5% will be set by each instructor, from quizzes, class participation, etc.

Exam Conflicts

If you are unable to take an exam and have a valid reason, e.g. medical emergency, you should contact your instructor ahead of time to explain the reason and provide appropriate proof. Make-up tests will be given only to those who have a valid reason to miss it.
Check your final exams schedule to see if you have any conflicts. If you have a final exam conflict, you should inform your instructor at the start of the semester.

Homework Problems

We will use WebAssign for homework. It will be assigned on a weekly basis.
Doing all the homework problems not only helps with your course grade, but is the way to ensure good performance in tests and quizzes.

Class Attendance

Regular attendance is required to be successful in this course.
Lack of attendance will most likely result in a lower grade.
Missing more than 25% of the classes are grounds for failing the class.

Academic Honesty

Cheating is considered a very serious offense. According to the University Catalog, cheating consists of:
"Giving or receiving unauthorized help before, during or after an examination".

The full strength of Binghamton Academic Honesty Policy will be applied to anyone caught cheating.
This may include failing the course, and further disciplinary action.
